Debt Management - Premier League Clubs Sounded a Warning

line

When thinking about debt management, Premier League football teams are rarely the first thing you think about but a report in the Telegraph says that clubs are being warned not to fall into massive levels of debt.

According to the report in the Telegraph, the President of football governing body, UEFA, Michel Platini, is warning football clubs to keep a handle on their debt management plans and not rely on massive arrears for their football clubs to function. The call from Platini to address debt management in football came as a warning against clubs who are buying their way to success on the back of racking up massive debts in the process.

Debt Management - Scoring an Own Goal

Debt management is very important in sport as is witnessed by the number of clubs who have been forced to enter receivership as a result of not addressing the debt problems. The debt management question being raised by Michel Platini is, according to the report in the Telegraph, in response to the number of investors from abroad who are coming in and taking over at Premiership football clubs. With the likes of Roman Abramovich at Chelsea and the Glazer family seizing control at Manchester United, investing in football clubs appears a very attractive proposition for foreigners. With regard to the debt management issue, the level of financial arrears of the top clubs around the world is astronomical, as the report in the Telegraph shows:

  • Manchester United - £551 Million in debt
  • Liverpool - £331 Million in debt
  • Arsenal - £263 Million in debt
  • Real Madrid - £177 Million in debt

Debt Management - A Premier League of Debt

The extent of the debt management problem in the English Premier League is at a level that far exceeds any other league in the world. According to the report in the Telegraph, when adding the debt of the top four clubs in the Premier League together the level of arrears is in excess of £1 billion, which is a clear indicator that debt management amongst the footballing elite is something that needs to be addressed.
